Thesis

NEAR is the settlement layer for cross-chain value transfer.

Why swaps matter more than smart contracts

Most L1 thesis pitches argue about developer adoption, TVL, or dApp counts — all lagging indicators. Swap volume is a leading indicator: money moves to where it's cheapest to move. If NEAR routes the cheapest swaps, capital flows through it whether developers build on NEAR or not.

Visa doesn't care which store you shop at — it just needs to be the cheapest way to move the payment. NEAR's intents.near contract occupies the same position for cross-chain capital: a routing layer where solvers compete on price, driving spreads down structurally rather than through subsidy. The data below measures whether this advantage is real and whether it holds.

Settlement Verification

Settlement slippage data is not yet available. The ingester captures deposit transactions from intents.near, but actual delivered amounts require correlating separate solver settlement transactions. Deposit counts and corridors are tracked; slippage measurement is a planned enhancement.

Settlements ingested: 45

Bear Case

This thesis holds unless:

  1. NEAR's spread edge disappears — if the median spread across NEAR corridors climbs above 50 bps, the cost advantage is gone and capital has no reason to route through NEAR over alternatives.
  2. Win rate collapses — if NEAR wins fewer than 40% of quote comparisons, it is not the best option often enough to attract sustained flow.
  3. Settlement slippage — if users consistently receive more than 50 bps less than quoted, trust erodes and volume migrates to more predictable bridges.

The tripwire panel above evaluates these conditions on every run. A tripped wire doesn't mean the investment is bad — it means the thesis needs updating with new evidence.

Methodology

  • Quotes are fetched every 15 minutes via dry-run API calls to each bridge provider, asking "how much destination token do I receive for X USD worth of origin token?"
  • Each quote is compared against a reference rate derived from each asset's spot USD pair at the same moment. The spread in basis points measures how much worse the bridge quote is versus fair market.
  • Settlement data is ingested from the NEAR blockchain by monitoring ft_on_transfer calls to the intents.near contract.
  • All figures regenerate from live data on each run of php artisan memo:generate.

This memo was generated by Tripwire. All figures are computed from observed data and regenerate on each run.
